Why the Monk Parakeet?
|
The Quaker Parrot, also called the Monk Parakeet, after its scientific name Myiopsitta Monachus came to San Leon about 25 years ago. They now populate the coast line of Galveston Bay including, San Leon from Eagle Point to Aprils Fools Point. As you enter the town of San Leon you will see large colonies of parrot nests made of sticks and twigs which have survived numerous tropical storms and even a few hurricanes. As you continue south towards the distillery you will pass the San Leon Marina, home of the Buccaneer Bar (famous for the annual talk like a pirate contest) and Pirates Galley Restaurant. This is the where Railean Rum was conceived... |

As you walk up to the Buccaneer Bar, you will first hear, and then see a couple of large communities of Monk Parakeets nesting in the date palm trees above. For an even closer look at these interesting wild parrots, go upstairs to the Pirates Galley and you will be at eye level to the Monks. As the distillery was being built and equipment installed we began to focus on the rum label and logo for Railean Rum. During a routine visit to the Pirates Galley we ran into Randy the Harbor Master and his wife Sheila who manages the Buccaneer Bar. They had recently rescued two baby Monks that had fallen from the nest just outside the Buccaneer Bar. The Monks were named Popeye and Olive Oyl. Both are fine now and are preparing for the next talk like a pirate contest. This was the point when we decided to utilize the Monk Parakeet as the mascot of the Railean Distillery and soon after that it became the official logo of Railean Rum... |
